Rwanda is a tiny landlocked republic in the heart of East Africa, which is for many people one of the continent's biggest surprises.
Much of the country is covered in lush, cool mountains, especially in the volcanic Virunga chain on the western side of the country. In the Volcanoes National Park, the peaks reach above the clouds and provide a large natural habitat for the legendary mountain gorillas. If you are looking to do a gorilla trek you should also check out Uganda for an unforgettable wildlife viewing experience for any traveller!
Of course the country is also famous for the tragic genocide in 1994, a brutal chapter in a complex rivalry between the Hutu and Tutsi tribal groupings, and we will visit the incredibly moving memorial centre in the capital of Kigali.
Rwanda has made enormous progress in rebuilding itself following the tragedy of the 1990s, and is rapidly acquiring a reputation for the warmth of the welcome provided to travellers. It is many visitors' highlight of a trip through East Africa, and with very good reason!
